Game of Thrones author & serial beloved character killer George R.R Martin was a guest on the Conan O’Brien Show on Wednesday night where he explains why he has no qualms in brutally disposing of beloved characters that seem central to the plot line.

[Possible spoilers if you have not seen latest episode/read book… if you haven’t, WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU?!!]

Martin states how he enjoys inserting the unexpected into his work and goes on to explain why he does what he does with his characters…

“We’ve all seen the movie where the hero is in trouble, he’s surrounded by 20 people, but you know he’s going to get away,” he said. “I want my readers or my viewers to be afraid when my characters are in danger. I want them to be afraid to turn the next page.”

He also goes on to say how he was once talking to three members of the shows cast and realised that they were all dead but didn’t know it yet, before sneakily adding in “They’d know it if they read the books!”

Well Georgie-boy, this is all well and good, but you may want to cool it on the character killing for a while or by the time Daenerys gets to Westeros she won’t even need dragons because everyone will be dead, but hey at least people will be giving a lot more thought to their wedding band in future.

The finale to the third season airs this Sunday night in the US (Ireland/UK on Monday night) and Martin has told viewers to be afraid…
