The Epic Tale of Download 2012

This day one year ago, the 7th of June 2012, a band of hardy Irish warriors set out on an epic journey to lay siege to the hallowed grounds of Donington Park and wreak carnage upon Download Festival 2012.

Our havoc-causing Fellowship was 13-strong, but in spirit we measured 10 times this number.

We reached Donington in early afternoon and went about setting up our war base and HQ in Brown Camp. Despite a slight lack of space, forgotten tent pegs and dodgy tent poles we eventually successfully made camp that even Bear Grylls would be proud of. We then began to analyse our surroundings and make allegiances with other nearby campers. Members of our carnage crew also embarked in twos and threes on scouting missions for resources (Beer and Food, mostly).

The conditions that day quickly began to deteriorate. Rain fell mercilessly and the wind howled around us. We battled through the weather, struggling and slopping through the ankle deep mud to carry back the treasures (beer) we had obtained in the local Village area. Others, however, were not so fortunate…

Despite the conditions, spirits were high. We laughed, we bantered, we beered but then the first casualty occurred. A loyal and faithful tent succumbed to the harsh conditions. Emergency action was taken to try and ensure its survival, but alas its time had come, albeit prematurely. One of our soldiers, who had been away on a hunt when the tent sadly passed, vowed revenge on it through an explicit vocal tirade. A brutal revenge he later carried out…

The next morning we marched to the arena. Our own fellowship was joined by 80,000+ metal headed warriors, who had all come with the same intentions, to mosh until they could mosh no more. Songs were sung and battle chants cried. Among the roars of “FENTON!!” and “SPARTANS, WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION?!” there was a sense of excited anticipation of what was to come.

Over the course of the next three days, we battled ferociously to the sounds of Machine Head, Trivium, Metallica, Megadeth and Lamb of God.

By night we partied. Camp site conditions began to improve but not without taking its toll on many, including some of our own, who decided enough is enough and sought warmer and dryer refuge elsewhere. This did however lead to a large amount of abandoned bounty to be foraged and pillaged (FREE BEER!!!!). Those of us who remained proceeded to lay down a gauntlet of drunken Irish craic and banter. Venturing off to neighbouring camp sites to spread the mischief being created.

Sunday. The day had arrived. The day we would witness the comeback and pay tribute to the great Metal Gods, Black Sabbath.

Spellbound by Ozzy’s front-man wizardry, captivated by Tony’s iron riffage and pounded by Geezer’s bass lines we revelled in a moment we dreamed of since our ears first heard the notes of Sabbaths music. This mindblowing performance signalled the beginning of the end of this great journey but not before we brought mayhem upon the campsites of Download one more time.

Broken, beaten, scarred and desperately hungover, the next morning we prepared for a long and arduous trip home. Much of what came with us was left behind. Ruined clothes, battered tents, and what was left of our collective dignities. It was an experience that will last us a life time and one that will happen again many times in the future.

  1. I was there last year and, although the torrential weather was a challenge, it did nothing to ruin my enjoyment! Ozzy was amazing!

I set off in the morning to do it all again, DL2013…I can’t wait!!! 🙂
